A psychotherapist explained why people have recurring dreams

Researchers agree that dream themes help us process our waking experiences. Dreams help us keep our emotions under control and adapt to stressful situations.

According to the Austrian psychotherapist Z. Freud, dreams are a way of processing the experience of being awake. Freud, dreams represent things we have pushed into the unconscious, our repressed and hidden desires.

Recurring dreams sometimes indicate mental illness. In generalised anxiety disorder, PTSD, OCD, the frequency of such dreams increases.

Another reason is metaphorical reflections of human experiences. For example, dreams of natural disasters occur after trauma or abuse. They reflect the fear, panic and helplessness that the person experienced in reality.

According to Vakula, with recurring dreams, one should pay attention to the area of life that causes anxiety. Once the anxiety is gone, the dream will stop recurring.

Repeated dreams can indicate problems that we are not aware of. In such situations, it is recommended to keep a dream diary. By analysing the entries over a longer period of time, it may be possible to find the root cause of the anxiety. It is probably worthwhile to show these records to a therapist or discuss them with someone close to you. According to Vacula, talking it through reduces stress levels.
