This treat contains theobromine and caffeine, which are easily digested by humans but are not tolerated by dogs. The accumulation of such chemicals in the dog’s body can cause serious side effects.
It all depends on the level of the above compounds in the chocolate, the amount eaten, the pet’s weight and sensitivity. Dark and bitter chocolate is more dangerous to the pet than milk chocolate. And white, which contains a small amount of theobromine, is less dangerous.
The first signs of chocolate poisoning occur within 6-12 h. This is increased salivation, urination and thirst, shortness of breath, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhoea. The dog’s heart rate increases, nervousness, excitability is observed.
Sometimes irregular heartbeat leads to a decrease in blood supply and, as a consequence, a decrease in body temperature.
